What order should a grooming routine follow?
A useful routine gives each step a purpose. It is not a checklist to complete regardless of how the pet is coping.Confirm that routine grooming is appropriate
Review coat condition, soil, tangles and tolerance before choosing products. Visible skin concerns or discomfort need veterinary guidance; severe matting needs an appropriate professional assessment.
Prepare products, towels and tools before starting. Check suitability on the current label instead of relying on a general impression that a product is for all pets.
Separate cleansing from conditioning
Follow the selected shampoo’s dilution and use directions. Wet, apply by section, work through and rinse completely. Do not make extra concentrate or longer contact a universal solution to poor technique.
If conditioning is needed, select a rinse-off product for the intended coat feel. Foam is not a measure of conditioning performance, and leave-in spray has a different role.
Finish with a careful review
Complete suitable drying and brushing, checking areas that retain moisture or tangle easily. A fluffy surface alone does not confirm that the routine is complete.
Keep a note of products and observations for the owner or the next appointment. Stop non-essential work if concerns arise rather than forcing the planned sequence.
